The workshop Design, Gestaltung, Formatività aims to discuss and expand
the very definition of Gestaltung in relation to the field of Design,
the concept of »Formatività«, and the specific vision of Gestaltung
developed by Hans Prinzhorn.
Based on the theoretical framework of Luigi Pareyson’s »teoria della formatività«, intended as »inseparable union of production and invention«, and of Hans Prinzhorn’s interpretation of Gestaltung as a primitive »impulse for expression«, the discussion intends to unveil important aspects of Gestaltung, especially as
a catalyst of practices and processes witch contribute to the production of knowledge through experimentation.

We will inquire upon process- and practice-based research in the field of Design by generating fruitful encounters with artists and designers from École Nationale Supérieure des Arts Décoratifs and École Nationale Supérieure de Création Industrielle in Paris, scientists from the Max Planck Institute of Colloids and Interfaces, and researchers in social sciences and humanities from the Cluster of Excellence Image, Knowledge, Gestaltung of Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin.
