Melania Savino studied Archaeology and Heritage at the University of Ca' Foscari in Venice before moving to the University of Cambridge to pursue an MPhil in Heritage Management and Museum Studies. She completed her PhD in 2013 at the School of Oriental and African Studies (SOAS), University of London. Her research has largely concentrated on the history and development of museums and archaeology during the first half of the twentieth century in the larger Mediterranean focusing in particular on Turkey and Italy. Her PhD explored the epistemological role of archaeological representations in the construction of the Turkish identity after the establishment of the Republic.

At the Cluster of Excellence she investigates the history of the archaeological excavations carried out by the Humboldt University in Sudan in the 1960s.
