Johannes Vogel is the Director General of the Museum für Naturkunde in Berlin. He represents the museum on national and international boards. He is a board member of the Landesverband der Museen zu Berlin (regional association of museums in Berlin) and a member of the advisory board of the Centre for Science and Policy in Cambridge, UK. Johannes Vogel majored in Biology at the Universities of Bielefeld and Cambridge. He received his doctorate in genetics at the University of Cambridge. From 1996 to 2004 Johannes Vogel worked as a specialist in moss, fungi and ferns. From 2004 to 2012 he was the Director of the Botany Department at the Natural History Museum in London.
