Carla J. Maier studied English Literature, Cultural Studies and Cultural Anthropology at the Goethe University Frankfurt/Main where she also received her Ph.D. on »Transcultural Sound Practices: Urban Dance Music in the UK« in 2013. She is currently working as a researcher in the DFG (German Research Foundation)-funded project Sound Studies Lab: Functional Sounds and on the project »Analogue  Storage Media« at the Interdisciplinary Laboratory »Image Knowledge Gestaltung« of the Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin. She is a member of the international DFG (German Research Foundation) research network, »Sound in Media Culture« (2010–2014) and the research network »Beyond Text: Creativity Beyond Borders« (Goldsmiths College, University of London, 2008–2012). Her research interests include: sound in popular music, everyday and functional sounds, transcultural and urban club culture, contemporary Black/Asian-British literature.

Within the Excellence Cluster, she will conduct a field study of contemporary subcultural and artistic uses of the analogue storage of sound.
